Syrian Finance Minister Mohammed Yusr Barniyeh has discussed preparations for IMF Article IV consultations with the fund’s Middle East and Central Asia director, Jihad Azour, the Finance Ministry said Friday.
The meeting took place alongside the IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok. The ministry said the two reviewed financial and institutional reforms, remaining challenges and Syria’s technical assistance needs.
According to the ministry’s account, Azour said the IMF had conducted more than 40 Syria-related technical assistance activities, missions and workshops over 18 months, including 20 missions to Damascus.
Article IV consultations provide a periodic assessment of a member country’s economy and policies. The statement described preparations for Syria’s consultations; it did not announce their completion.
