Syria will return to the Arab constituency at the International Monetary Fund on November 1, the Finance Ministry announced, after belonging to the Russian-led group since 2012.
Syria TV reported on Thursday, October 15, that the ministry disclosed the change a day earlier following meetings at the IMF and World Bank annual gatherings in Bangkok.
Finance Minister Mohammed Yisr Barnieh and central bank governor Safwat Raslan met the Arab constituency’s executive director, Ali al-Hosani, to discuss ongoing work with the Fund.
Their agenda included technical assistance, capacity building and preparations for consultations under Article IV of the IMF’s founding agreement. Those reviews assess a member country’s economic conditions and policies, usually annually.
The ministry said al-Hosani expressed support for following up on these files with Syrian institutions.
Barnieh said he hoped the Arab office would support and track these preparations and other joint projects between Syrian institutions and the IMF.
