Syria’s agricultural disaster relief fund has approved nearly 211 million new Syrian pounds in compensation for 8,289 farmers in seven provinces, Syria TV reported Tuesday, citing the Agriculture Ministry.

The decision covers damage from hail, spring frost and rising Euphrates water levels during March, April and May. It should not be read as a compensation announcement for the recent autumn floods.

About 195,000 dunams of farmland were affected in Daraa, Deir Ezzor, Raqqa, Homs, Hama, Aleppo and Tartous, the ministry said. Crops included cereals, vegetables, legumes, stone-fruit trees and tobacco.

The fund’s board also recommended water-control works in Aleppo’s al-Siha area and training to improve damage assessments. The report announced approval of compensation, not that payments had already been made.
