A Syrian Atomic Energy Commission delegation visited medical technology company IBA in Belgium to discuss equipment for a planned facility producing medical isotopes in Aleppo province, SANA reported Tuesday.
The delegation, led by commission chairman Mudhar al-Akaleh, discussed technical specifications for a medical cyclotron during the Nov. 2 visit.
The proposed facility would produce radioactive isotopes and radiopharmaceuticals for cancer diagnosis and treatment, serving northern and northeastern Syria under the Rays of Hope initiative, according to the report.
Al-Akaleh said the project was intended to strengthen local medical capabilities and reduce patients’ need to travel for specialized services.
The report did not give a construction timetable, project cost or equipment delivery date.
