Syria's Finance Ministry has launched a plan to process and close accumulated tax files before the country moves to a new tax system, Finance Minister Mohammed Yisr Barnieh said Monday.
The ministry and the General Commission for Taxes and Fees have issued decisions to begin implementation, Barnieh said in remarks carried by Syrian state television and reported by Syria TV.
He said the plan would set deadlines and measurable performance targets for resolving outstanding files, standardize audit procedures and reduce discretionary assessments.
The aim is to prevent unresolved cases from carrying over into the next system and give taxpayers an opportunity to settle their files, he said.
The ministry has said the new tax framework is planned for the start of 2027. The report did not give a final deadline for clearing the backlog or announce a general tax amnesty.
