Syria’s Higher Education Ministry has opened formal contacts with the United Arab Emirates over the non-recognition of degrees from the Syrian Virtual University and several private universities, state news agency SANA reported on Monday.

Minister Marwan al-Halabi announced the correspondence on Sunday. He said discussions cover academic and regulatory requirements and aim to protect graduates’ employment prospects.

The ministry plans to continue its contacts until a clear resolution is reached, al-Halabi said. He did not give a timetable.

The announcement describes efforts to resolve the issue, not a decision by the UAE to recognize the qualifications. SANA did not name the affected private universities.
