Syria's Finance Ministry is preparing to expand electronic payments for taxes and government fees, with a working group tasked with drawing up a plan to reduce reliance on cash.

Finance Minister Mohammed Yisr Barnieh met banking officials, Central Bank representatives and payment companies to discuss technical barriers and connections between public banks and digital platforms, the ministry said, according to SANA on Friday.

The talks also covered putting tax information and payment services online. Barnieh called for a gradual transition and measures that could be implemented quickly.

The working group will include the Finance Ministry, Central Bank, General Commission for Taxes and Fees, and payment providers. No nationwide launch date was announced in the report.
