Syria has formally resumed its seats in the Arab groups at the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group, effective Nov. 1, Finance Minister Mohammed Yisr Barnieh said Tuesday.

In remarks on Facebook reported by SANA, Barnieh said the move would strengthen coordination with Arab countries and support financial reforms.

He said preparations were underway to resume IMF Article IV consultations and expand technical assistance. Work was also continuing on a Syria Recovery and Reconstruction Fund, known as START, with the World Bank Group.

The Finance Ministry had announced the planned IMF constituency change on Oct. 14. Syria had been part of the Russian Federation constituency since 2012. The return to the Arab groups does not itself constitute a new loan announcement.
