The thalassemia department at Tartous National Hospital has provided 5,909 free services since the start of the year, including blood transfusions, medicines, vaccinations and laboratory tests, its director told state news agency SANA on Friday.

Director Hossam Hassan said the department follows 434 children and adults and receives an average of 25 patients a day from Tartous and other provinces.

Its services included transfusing 2,700 units of separated red blood cells, providing 2,564 medication-related services and administering 645 vaccinations, he said.

The department also offers clinical follow-up, health education for patients and families, and genetic blood-disorder counseling.

The figures describe services delivered, not the number of individual people treated.
