A flour mill and grain silos reopened in Tell Rifaat, north of Aleppo, on Sunday after about 14 years out of operation, state news agency SANA reported.
The Syrian Grain Establishment worked with Shafak and Global Communities to rehabilitate the facility. The work covered structural, mechanical and electrical systems as well as administrative buildings, according to the report.
Mahmoud Abu Bakr, the grain establishment’s Aleppo branch director, said the silos have a storage capacity of 12,000 tonnes and are due to receive farmers’ wheat from the next harvest season.
He said Aleppo marketed around 350,000 tonnes of wheat this year, with storage constraints forcing about 100,000 tonnes to be moved elsewhere or stored outdoors. Officials said reopening the facility would reduce transport burdens and support flour supplies to bakeries.
