A national taekwondo championship involving 365 male and female athletes opened Friday at al-Jalaa Sports City in Damascus, SANA reported Saturday.
The competition covers children, youngsters and cadet categories. Taekwondo Federation secretary Sherif Dirki said the event had attracted broad participation across age groups.
Dirki said the federation was working to identify promising athletes and provide continued training for future competitions. He added that later championships would separate age groups more clearly to allow more specialized competition.
Referees committee head Isber Elias urged clubs to continue developing young athletes. Coach Abdul Rahman Baqla said training and equipment should be suited to the physical and technical needs of each age group.
