Syrian fencer Layan Ahmado reached the second round of the Asian Under-23 Fencing Championships in Bahrain, state news agency SANA reported Sunday as Syria’s team concluded its participation.
The competition brought together 188 athletes from 15 Asian countries. Syrian teammates Nour Rizk and Shahd Ahmad exited in the group stage, the report said.
Delegation head Taghreed Ibrahim described Ahmado’s result as Syria’s first advance beyond the group stage at an international championship in this age category, in a statement carried by the Ministry of Sports and Youth.
Ibrahim said gaining experience and improving the athletes’ skills for future tournaments were key objectives of the trip.
