At least 12,227 Syrians have returned voluntarily from Germany since 2024, according to a survey of the country’s 16 state interior and migration ministries reported by the Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung.
Syria TV, which reported the findings on Friday, said Bavaria recorded the largest number of departures, at 4,125, while Hamburg recorded the fewest, at 77.
The newspaper said the total may undercount returns because some people leave without notifying the authorities or using assisted-return programs.
The recorded departures amount to about 1.36% of the more than 900,000 Syrians living in Germany, according to the report.
Germany is considering increasing incentives for voluntary departure. Syria TV said the proposed 2027 budget would raise funding for voluntary-return support from €38 million to €125 million. That allocation concerns the wider program and should not be read as funding exclusively for Syrians.
