Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani called for regional cooperation and respect for sovereignty at the Manama Dialogue in Bahrain on Saturday, saying Gulf stability was closely tied to Syria's security.
Speaking at a session on the foundations of regional security, he said Damascus wanted economic partnerships to turn the improving political climate into practical gains for Syrians, state news agency SANA reported.
Al-Shaibani said Syria was cooperating transparently with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the International Atomic Energy Agency. He also called for information-sharing and coordination between states to address cross-border smuggling.
He met US official Michael P. DiMino IV on the conference sidelines. SANA reported the meeting without announcing an agreement or detailing its agenda.
The 22nd Manama Dialogue runs from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1. Al-Shaibani attended its opening Friday.
