Syrian chess player Mazen Fandi won silver in the classical competition at the Asian Age Group Chess Championship in Ahmedabad, India, Syria's Sports and Youth Ministry announced Thursday.

Fandi also gained 10 rating points at the tournament, SANA reported Friday, citing the ministry. The report did not specify his age category.

The national team player previously won gold in blitz and rapid chess and bronze in classical chess at the Arab championship in Kuwait.

Fandi began playing at seven and won his first national title a year later. In earlier comments to SANA, he credited coach Abdul Rahim al-Mahyo and the ministry for supporting his progress.
