A Syrian government committee is studying a proposal to grant citizenship to children of Syrian women married to non-Syrians, Social Affairs and Labor Minister Hind Kabawat said Wednesday.
The Interior Ministry chairs the committee, which also includes representatives of the religious endowments and social affairs ministries and the State Council, she told a high-level discussion on legal identity at the United Nations in Geneva.
Kabawat said missing fathers and lost documents can prevent children from obtaining national identification numbers and accessing education, healthcare and social protection, according to SANA.
She also described work on civil-court fees, juvenile justice training with UNICEF and specialized judicial committees in Raqqa and eastern Aleppo to restore courts and civil records.
The citizenship proposal remains under study; the report did not announce that it had become law.
